Game #92 - Toronto Blue Jays (42-49) @ San Francisco Giants (38-53) - game recap

Jonatan Clase hit a 3-run HR in a 9-3 win over the Giants

After another blowout loss due to the inept offense and some bad defense and pitching, the Blue Jays were looking to snap the 3-game skid and avoid their 15th series loss and 9th season series loss of the season. Yohendrick Pinago was optoned to AAA-ball and righty Chad Dallas was recalled from AAA-ball. Spencer Miles got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Jonatan Clase was in LF. Could the Blue Jays snap the 3-game skid and avoid their 15th series loss and 9th season series loss of the season? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as Jonatan Clase belted a 3-run jack to right-center; also scoring Brandon Valenzuela and Sean Keys
  • The Giants got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Vicyor Bericoto singled scoring Rafael Devers
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 3rd as Brando Valenzuela singled scoring Vladimire Guerrero Jr.
  • Two batters later Sean Keys singled scoring Kazuma Okamoto and Valenzuela
  • Two batters later, Andres Gimenez singled home Keys
  • A batter later, Jonatan Clase scored on a sac fly by Ernie Clement
  • Trevor McDonald pitching line: 1.1IP 11H 8R (all earned (1BB 0JK 58 pitches (37 for striikes)
  • The Giants got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a double play ball hit by Devers that scored Heliot Rammos
  • Spencer Miles pitching line: 4IP 7H 2R (both earned) 0BB 1K 55 pitches (38 for strikes)
  • The Giants got one back in the bottom of the 5th as Luis Arraez doubled scoring Ramos
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 9th on a double play ball hit by Guerrero Jr. that scored Clement
  • Final score: Blue Jays 9 Giants 3

My Take:

  • Both starters threw 55 pitches with very d ifferent outcomes. Spencer Miles gave up a pair of runs on 7 hits while walking none and striking iut 1. Unlike Giants starter Trevor McDonald, Miles was able to make some pitches to get out of the jams he hot into with minimal damage. Spencer Miles found himself in a familiar role, pitching in a bullpen game due to injury (Maqx Scherzer) and ineffectiveness (Patrick Corbin). You have to think Corbin will be released once Scherzer is ready to pitch again.
  • The bullpen gave up a run on 2 hits while walking none and striking out 5. Corbin was credited with the win. Mason Fluharty, Jeff Hoffman and Louis Varland all retired every batter they faced
  • The offense broke out in a big way with a cobined 8 runs on 10 hits, a sac fly and a walk. Jonatan Clase got things started in the 2nd inning by going yaed for 3 runs. The Blue Jays put together a 5-run rally the next innings. One game. Now let's see if they can do it again tomorrow
  • Every Blue Jays starter except Daulton Varsho had a  hit
  • The Giants were unsuccessful on both their ABS callenges. The Blue Jays did not attempt an ABS challenge
  • The Blue Jays were 4-10 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try for 2 straight wins and to notch their 12th series win odf the season and 4th season series win of the season. Dylan Cease starts against Giants righty Logan Webb

Game #92 - Toronto Blue Jays (42-49) @ San Francisco Giants (38-52)

I was pretty damned good until I got my bell rung.

This was me watching the game last night....

There are no words.

I think we're all just riding it out until the ASG.

Hopefully a good start from Spencer Miles will bring a little positivity to us.

Otherwise...it's gonna be like this...

Game #90 - Toronto Blue Jays (42-48) @ Seattle Mariners (47-44) - game recap

Tyler Rogers threw a scoreless inning in a 4-0 shutout loss to the Mariners

After a blowout shutout loss yesterday due to a bad day for Shane Bieber and the pitchers and the offense managing one measly single the entire game, the Blue Jays were looking to notch their 11th series win of the season. Trey Yesavage got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after the half day off as DH yesterday (Sean Key served as DH today).Ernie Clement was at SS and Luis Urias got the start at 2B. Could the Blue Jays notch their 11th series win of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Mariners opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd on a sac fly by Cal Raleigh that scored Victor Robles
  • The Mariners added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Mitch Garver whacked a 2-run blast to left; also scoring Cole Young
  • Trey Yesavage pitching line: 6IP 3H 3R (2 earned) 2BB 7K 96 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • Emerson Hancock pitching line: 7IP 2H 0R 2BB 5K 92 pitches (58 for strikes)
  • The Mariners added a run in the bottom of the 8th as Josh Naylor singled scoring Randy Arozarena
  • Final score: Mariners 4 Blue Jays 0

My Take:

  • Trey Yesavage fired 6 solid innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7. He got stronger as the game went on and  retired the last 8 batters he faced. More important, he got 18 outs a day after Shane Bieber barely survived 4 innings and was nearly knocked out of the game in the 2nd inning. Yesavage seems to be slowly finding his form after missing the first month with an injury.
  • The bullpen gave up a run on 3 hits while walking none and striking out 3 over 2 innings. Mason Fluharty, who has been overused this season, was responsible for the 3 hits and run. Tyler Rogers retired every batter he faced in his inning of work.
  • Well, the Blue Jays managed a few more base runners and got a runner into scoring position today. Vlad even reached base twice today, breaking up the perfect game in the 1st inning. If things don't turn around soon, David Popkins may find himself out of a job. The games are only going to get harder as the wild card races heat up and teams acquire players in trades to strengthen their lineups and pitching staffs.
  • The catchers had opposite results on ABS challenges with Alejandro Kirk overturning three ABS challenges while Mariners catcher Mitch Garver was unsuccessful on both his ABS challenges
  • The Blue Jays were 0-2 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays head south to San Francisco to continue their west coast road swing. The Blue Jays swept the season series last year, outscoring the Giants 18-9. Ace Kevin Gausman starts against Giants righty Landen Roupp
